How to formulate layer hen feed
Layer feed formulation specifics
Layer hen feed formulation is distinguished by the importance of calcium and phosphorus, essential for eggshell formation.
Key nutritional requirements
- Calcium: 3.5 to 4.2% depending on age
- Available phosphorus: 0.35 to 0.45%
- Crude protein: 16 to 18%
- Metabolizable energy: 2,700 to 2,850 kcal/kg
Calcium: the key ingredient
A laying hen uses about 2 grams of calcium per egg for the shell. Calcium carbonate should represent 8-10% of the diet. Providing part of the calcium in granular form allows slow release during the night.
